In a significant development highlighting the synergy between humanitarian initiatives and non-kinetic operations in counterinsurgency efforts, the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has commended the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA).
According Director of Public Relations and Information Nigerian Air Force Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, these commendations came during a courtesy call by the President of DEPOWA, Mrs. Oghogho Gwabin Musa, to the Headquarters of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).
Air Marshal Abubakar recognized the instrumental role played by DEPOWA in winning the hearts and minds of the populace, thereby contributing significantly to the non-kinetic approach in addressing the nation’s security challenges. This approach emphasizes the use of soft power, characterized by attraction, persuasion, and diplomacy, as opposed to military force.
The CAS stressed the importance of non-kinetic warfare in addressing the multifaceted security issues facing the nation, acknowledging that kinetic operations alone could only solve a fraction of the problem. He stated, “DEPOWA initiatives, along with similar associations, play a vital role in enhancing civil-military relations and fostering the confidence of the population.”
Air Marshal Abubakar paid tribute to the wives of military and police personnel, describing them as some of the strongest and most courageous individuals. He praised their unwavering support for their spouses, who are committed to defending the country even at the risk of their lives. He expressed gratitude for their motivation and support during military operations.
Recognizing DEPOWA’s transformation into one of the most renowned women’s organizations in Nigeria, the CAS urged the association to collaborate with like-minded organizations to amplify their impact. He emphasized the importance of seeking partnerships and building supportive networks to strengthen their collective efforts.
Earlier in the meeting, Mrs. Oghogho Musa, President of DEPOWA, highlighted the association’s founding mission of unifying the wives’ associations of Armed Forces and Police officers. DEPOWA’s initiatives have positively impacted the lives of the less privileged and vulnerable in society through various programs, including skills acquisition, educational support, charity, and economic empowerment.
Mrs. Musa shared DEPOWA’s commitment to further reducing poverty by offering Information Technology training to youths in military barracks and surrounding communities. Additionally, DEPOWA plans to empower widows from all the associations to become self-reliant and support their families.
DEPOWA’s focus extends to assisting Internally Displaced Persons and providing aid to wounded soldiers, aligning with the Armed Forces’ peace-building agenda in the fight against terrorism through non-kinetic support.
The meeting witnessed the presence of prominent figures, including Architect (Mrs.) Rekiya Abubakar, the National President of the Nigerian Air Force Officers Wives Association, Mrs. Elizabeth Egbetokun, National President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association, and other executive members.
This event showcases the vital role played by DEPOWA and similar organizations in Nigeria’s holistic approach to addressing security challenges through non-kinetic operations and humanitarian efforts.
