FG sets up committee for Nigeria’s 65th independence anniversary

The Federal Government has inaugurated an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) to plan and execute activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day celebration.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, who inaugurated the committee, emphasized the importance of unity, patriotism, and collective responsibility in building a stronger nation.

“This anniversary is a reminder of where we are coming from and where we are going. It is not just about celebrating the past but also a call to action for the future,” Akume said.

The anniversary activities will begin with a World Press Conference on Thursday, September 25, 2025, followed by a Juma’at Service, women and youth programmes, an arts exhibition, a church service, a public lecture, and will culminate in a Presidential Broadcast and Independence Day Parade on October 1.

As part of the commemoration, the SGF also unveiled the Nigeria @65 Compendium Project Workstation, initiated by CherryAfrica Magazine in collaboration with his office. The project will document Nigeria’s historical milestones and feature interviews with government officials, showcasing progress across ministries, agencies, and key sectors in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The compendium, Akume noted, will serve as a repository of Nigeria’s developmental journey from pre-colonial times to the present.
