Amnesty International has conducted a two-day training in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, equipping journalists from the South-South region with human rights-focused reporting skills.
The sessions also created space for dialogue on the implications of Nigeria’s Cybercrimes Act on press freedom.
Legal practitioner and rights advocate, Dr. Abdul Mahmud, presented a paper titled “Press Freedom Under Siege: Arrests, Intimidation, and the Nigerian Constitutional Order.”
Similarly, Dr. Kabiru Danladi Lawanti of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, facilitated discussions on “Ethical Reporting on Human Rights Issues in Contexts of Conflict or Recurring Violence.”
Dr. Arthur-Martins Aginam delivered two sessions under the theme “The Journalist as a Human Rights Advocate,” urging participants to champion the rights of the marginalized and vulnerable.
The programme, Amnesty International said, underscores its commitment to defending press freedom and safeguarding the rights of journalists in Nigeria.
