Soldier kills wife, commits suicide at Wawa cantonment

Tragedy struck at Wawa Cantonment in Niger State as a soldier, identified as Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi of the 221 Battalion, allegedly shot and killed his wife before taking his own life.

According to a statement issued by Captain Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, the incident occurred on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at Block 15, Room 24 of the Corporals and Below Quarters within the Cantonment.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the soldier, who was on duty within the barracks, sought permission from his superior to attend to personal matters. He was later found dead alongside his wife in their apartment.

“The Nigerian Army deeply regrets this unfortunate incident and commiserates with the family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased,” the statement read. “An in-depth investigation has commenced to determine the circumstances that led to the tragic occurrence.”

Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, assured that the incident would be thoroughly investigated and the findings made public. He also pledged that measures would be taken to prevent a recurrence.

The remains of the couple have been preserved pending further investigation.
