FRSC returns ₦6.2m, valuables to crash victim’s family in Katsina

In a rare display of transparency and integrity, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Funtua Unit Command, Katsina State, has handed over ₦6.2 million and personal belongings valued at over ₦100,000 to the next of kin of a crash victim who died in a recent road accident.

In a statement, Assistant Corps Marshal / Corps Public Education Officer Federal Road Safety Corps Headquarters, Abuja Olusegun Ogungbemide said the presentation followed a fatal crash that occurred on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at Dikke, along the Funtua–Sokoto route, involving a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus with registration number SRZ 112 LG.

According to preliminary investigations, the accident was caused by a tyre burst aggravated by excessive speeding, which led to the driver losing control of the vehicle. Out of the 18 passengers onboard, one adult male died, while 17 others sustained varying degrees of injuries. All the injured victims were rescued and taken to the General Hospital, Funtua, for medical treatment by FRSC operatives.

During the post-crash operation, officials recovered a bag containing ₦6.2 million and other personal effects, which were later presented to the deceased’s family representative by the Unit Commander.

Reacting to the development, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased. He also urged motorists to conduct proper vehicle maintenance, especially tyre checks, before embarking on trips.

Mohammed warned that excessive speeding and the use of worn-out tyres remain major causes of avoidable road crashes nationwide. He reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to discipline, accountability, and compassion, stressing that the protection of lives and property under its custody remains a sacred duty.
