France has restated its dedication to global peace, multilateral cooperation, and shared democratic values as the French Embassy in Abuja marked the 107th anniversary of Armistice Day — the end of the First World War.
At a solemn ceremony held on Monday, the Embassy honoured French soldiers and millions of others who lost their lives in defence of liberty and human dignity during the First World War and subsequent global conflicts.
French Ambassador to Nigeria, Marc Fonbaustier, who led the commemoration, described the event as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made to secure peace. He praised the bravery and selflessness of fallen soldiers, noting that their legacy continues to shape France’s national values.
“France remembers not only those who fell on the fields of Europe but also those who fought and died in Africa, Asia, and beyond,” he said. Fonbaustier reaffirmed France’s commitment to deepening ties with Nigeria, highlighting both nations’ shared vision of stability rooted in dialogue, democracy, and mutual respect. “France stands with Nigeria and all peace-loving nations in defending the ideals of freedom and human dignity,” he added.
French Defence Attaché to Nigeria, Colonel Stéphane Useo, said the annual commemoration reflects France’s enduring resolve to promote global peace. He noted that remembrance is a tradition passed down through generations and serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to build a world where liberty and security are assured for all.
Useo paid tribute to the courage of French soldiers across generations, sharing a personal account of how war shaped his own family’s history. “Freedom is never free, and peace must always be defended,” he said.
He also highlighted the enduring symbolism of the Unknown Soldier beneath the Arc de Triomphe and the Bleuet de France — the blue cornflower that has represented solidarity with veterans since 1925 — describing it as “a small but powerful emblem of compassion, resilience, and unity.”
The ceremony ended with the laying of wreaths and a moment of silence at the embassy’s memorial plaque, as France reaffirmed that remembrance is not only about honouring the past, but also strengthening the resolve to build a peaceful and united future.
