Tuggar urges broadcasters to strengthen Nigeria’s information sovereignty

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, has called on independent broadcasters to play a more decisive role in safeguarding Nigeria’s information sovereignty, fostering national cohesion, and enhancing digital security.

Speaking through the Ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, at the 2025 Annual General Meeting and Conference of the Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria (IBAN), Tuggar said the broadcast sector remains central to shaping Nigeria’s global image and maintaining internal stability.

He noted that the conference theme, “Broadcasting for Information Sovereignty, National Cohesion and Digital Security,” aligns with the nation’s foreign policy priorities, particularly as Nigeria seeks to assert control over its information space in an increasingly complex global environment.

Tuggar urged broadcasters to create more locally relevant content, combat disinformation, and promote unity by bridging ethnic and cultural divides. A more cohesive Nigeria, he said, wields stronger influence on the international stage.

The minister also underscored the importance of digital security, warning that cyberattacks and misinformation campaigns pose significant risks to national stability. Protecting the broadcast sector from such threats, he added, is essential for maintaining public trust and preserving the integrity of national information systems.

He further called for deeper collaboration between government institutions and the media to safeguard Nigeria’s information ecosystem and project a positive and accurate image of the country globally.

The IBAN conference brought together industry leaders and stakeholders to examine the evolving challenges and responsibilities of broadcasting in a rapidly changing digital landscape.
