Zulum declares Monday statewide fasting, prayers against renewed Boko Haram threat

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has declared Monday, November 24, 2025, a statewide day of fasting and prayers, urging residents to seek divine intervention against the resurgence of Boko Haram attacks.

In a statewide broadcast, Governor Zulum said spiritual fortification was essential to complement the state’s security strategies. “As a people of faith, we believe our security strategies must be underpinned by prayer. I hereby declare Monday, 24th November, 2025, as a Statewide Day of Fasting and Prayer for the restoration of peace in Borno State and the country,” he announced.

This will not be the first time Borno State is turning to communal fasting and prayers to counter the threat of terrorists.

Zulum called on all residents—regardless of religious affiliation—to participate. “On this day, I call upon every resident of Borno, regardless of faith, to join in prayer for the lasting peace and prosperity of our beloved state and Nigeria. Let us devote ourselves to constant prayers, seeking Almighty God’s mercy,” he said.

He urged citizens to pray for protection against “evildoers, saboteurs, and all enemies of peace,” while assuring continued government support for security agencies, local vigilantes, and community-based security initiatives. Dialogue, he noted, would also be pursued “where possible, without compromising the state’s integrity or the safety of our people.”

Reflecting on Borno’s 15-year battle with Boko Haram, Zulum noted that the conflict had displaced millions across the state’s 27 local government areas and disrupted socio-economic life. He credited unity among residents and support for the armed forces for helping the state overcome its darkest moments.

Despite recent isolated attacks, he said Borno had experienced significant stability, enabling farmers to cultivate and harvest crops expected to sustain communities for the next one to two years. The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting farmers with inputs and agro-chemicals to achieve year-round farming and food sufficiency.

Zulum commended residents for their resilience, noting that their steadfast prayers, fasting, and support for security forces—including the Civilian JTF, hunters, and vigilantes—remain pivotal to the state’s progress.

“Your resilience has been a source of inspiration and strength to me and to the entire administration,” he said.
