NCWS praises Tinubu, Marwa; seeks partnership with NDLEA in drug fight

The National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for reappointing Brigadier General Buba Marwa (rtd) as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for another five-year term.

The commendation was made by NCWS National President, Princess Edna Azura, during a courtesy visit to Marwa at the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday. She described the reappointment as a “national endorsement” of Marwa’s contributions to public security, women and youth protection, and the fight against substance abuse.

Princess Azura lauded Marwa’s leadership as transformative, highlighting the agency’s achievements in dismantling drug trafficking networks, intercepting record quantities of illicit substances, expanding community-based preventive education, and strengthening rehabilitation pathways for victims of substance abuse.

She called for closer collaboration between NCWS and NDLEA through joint sensitisation campaigns in schools, markets, and communities, as well as training women leaders in drug prevention, treatment, and care. “Our ongoing school outreach programmes and community sensitisation campaigns show that when women are fully engaged, prevention becomes more effective,” she said.

Marwa, in response, welcomed the partnership, stressing that the drug menace affects every Nigerian community. “With about 15 million drug users in the country, government alone cannot tackle this challenge. NCWS, as mothers leading families nationwide, are critical partners in redeeming the youth and women affected,” he said.

The NDLEA boss pledged to organise specialized Drug Use Prevention, Treatment and Care (DPTC) training for NCWS leaders in 2026, equipping them to take the initiative to state and grassroots levels. He also urged the Council to support the agency’s ongoing drug integrity test programme for intending couples to encourage early detection and treatment.

The engagement signals a strengthened collaboration between NDLEA and civil society, particularly women’s groups, in Nigeria’s ongoing fight against substance abuse.
