NSCDC arrests three suspects over Yobe telecom tower vandalism

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested three suspects allegedly involved in the vandalization of a telecommunications tower in Yobe State.

NSCDC spokesman Afolabi Babawale said the Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad (CG’s SIS) acted on credible intelligence indicating that the suspects were collaborating with a terrorist group to sabotage a live tower in Savannah, Potiskum Local Government Area.

The suspects—Ibrahim Jibrin, 44, of Damaturu; Dahiru Ibrahim Isa, 38, of Babban Layi, Potiskum; and Usman Ali Isa, 27, of Dabar Mai Chafa, Potiskum—were arrested at the scene. Babawale disclosed that Ibrahim Jibrin, identified as the specialist, had been hired to decommission the mast for N800,000 and had already received N200,000 from an accomplice in Kano. Recovered items include vandalized tower components and tools used in the operation.

He added that the SIS also conducted other arrests in line with its renewed mandate to combat criminality. On November 15, two suspects, David Moses and Nuhu Inusa, were arrested in Abuja for motorbike and phone thefts, with stolen items recovered. Additional suspects—Akawe Uter, Sunny Obasi, and Ezugwu Godwin—were apprehended for illegal power connections and harassment of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) staff.

Separately, Vincent Haliru Maigari, 27, was arrested for stealing plumbing materials from an apartment near Didi/Madiba Casa Estate, which were intended for conversion into a hotel; some of his accomplices have also been detained.

Babawale noted that NSCDC Commandant General Prof. Ahmed Audi has instructed specialized units to intensify efforts against infrastructure vandalism and economic sabotage. The SIS Commander, Samu Appollos Dandaura, assured that suspects will be prosecuted following the completion of investigations, emphasising that public cooperation remains crucial for effective enforcement.
