In a significant development in the ongoing legal proceedings against Nigerian singer Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, issued a production warrant on Friday, October 5, 2023. The warrant comes as Naira Marley faces prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on 11-count charges related to conspiracy and credit card fraud.
During the court’s resumed session on the aforementioned date, counsel to the defendant, Olalekan Ojo, SAN, informed the court about the unavailability of the defendant. Ojo explained that Naira Marley was currently detained by the police for interrogation in connection with the murder of Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, also known as Mohbad. Consequently, Ojo requested an adjournment of the trial due to his client’s absence.
In response to Ojo’s request, the prosecution counsel, Bilkisu Buhari, urged the court to issue a production warrant against Naira Marley to ensure his presence at the next scheduled court date.
Justice Oweibo, after considering the arguments from both sides, granted the prosecution’s request and issued a production warrant against the defendant. The warrant mandates the authorities to produce Naira Marley in court for the continuation of his trial.
The judge, in light of these developments, adjourned the case until October 30, 2023. This date will mark the next phase in the legal proceedings against Naira Marley as he faces the charges brought forth by the EFCC.
The issuance of the production warrant underscores the seriousness of the charges against Naira Marley and emphasizes the court’s commitment to ensuring a fair and just trial in this high-profile case. The public will undoubtedly be closely following the developments in this legal battle as it continues to unfold.
