Belgium reaffirms support for transparency in Nigeria’s extractive sector

Belgium has reiterated its commitment to promoting transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s extractive industry, describing the sector as a key priority in its bilateral and multilateral engagements.

Belgium’s Ambassador to Nigeria recently met with the newly appointed Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (NEITI), Mr. Musa Sarkin Adar, in early December. Discussions during the meeting focused on Belgium’s active role in advancing transparency at the multilateral level, including its participation in initiatives such as the Kimberley Process, as well as preparations for NEITI’s next validation exercise scheduled for 2026.

The ambassador congratulated Mr. Adar on his appointment and conveyed best wishes for a successful tenure, while reaffirming Belgium’s support for NEITI’s mandate to strengthen openness and good governance in Nigeria’s extractive industries.

In line with Belgium’s policy priorities, the Belgian Embassy has maintained observer status on the NEITI National Stakeholder Working Group since 2024. The embassy also participated as an observer in the group’s most recent meeting, held on December 12 in Lagos.

Belgium affirmed its readiness to continue working closely with the Government of Nigeria and NEITI to advance transparency, fairness, and sustainable governance in the extractive sector.
