OPHK uncovers mastermind of suicide bombings in North-East

Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) has identified Shariff Umar as the principal coordinator of a suicide bombing network linked to recent attacks and attempted attacks in the North-East, marking a significant breakthrough in ongoing counter-terrorism efforts in the region.

In  a statement, Media Information Officer Headquarters Joint Task Force( North East) Operation HADIN KAI Lieut. Col. Sani Uba said the identification followed intelligence-led cordon-and-search operations conducted in the Kalmari area of Maiduguri on 31 December 2025, during which 14 suspects connected to suicide bombing activities were arrested. Subsequent investigations and profiling established the structure, roles, and operational linkages of the terror cell.

He said the suspected suicide bomber currently in custody, Ibrahim Muhammad, provided detailed and corroborated statements identifying Shariff Umar, also known as “Yusuf,” as the ringleader of the network. Investigators said Umar was responsible for recruiting, preparing, directing, and deploying suicide bombers to designated targets, as well as coordinating logistics and the supply of improvised explosive device (IED) components.

Further investigations revealed that Shariff Umar coordinated the suicide bombing at the Gamboru Market Mosque on 24 December 2025, in which his accomplice, Adamu, detonated a suicide vest and was killed in the process. He was also linked to a foiled suicide bombing attempt in Damaturu, during which he allegedly personally handed over IED components to the bomber in Maiduguri.

The investigation also established additional links within the network, including the involvement of Umar’s wife, Yagana Modu, while his stepdaughter, Amina, reportedly confirmed having previously seen the suspected bomber within their residence. Security sources said these findings exposed the domestic and community-based concealment tactics commonly employed by terrorist facilitators.

All suspects remain in custody and are undergoing intensive, multi-layered investigations aimed at dismantling the network, identifying further collaborators, and recovering any remaining explosives or logistical assets.

OPHK has urged members of the public to cooperate with security agencies, stressing that terrorist networks often rely on concealment within communities. The task force appealed for vigilance and the prompt reporting of suspicious persons or activities, noting that effective collaboration between security forces and civilians remains critical to preventing attacks and restoring lasting peace in the North-East.
