CoAS reaffirms Army’s support for National Defence College

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s continued support for the National Defence College (NDC), Abuja, underscoring the importance of strategic collaboration in addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.

Lieutenant General Shaibu made the commitment on Monday, 5 January 2026, while receiving the Commandant of the NDC, Rear Admiral Abdullahi Ahmed, during a courtesy visit to the Army Headquarters.

The Army Chief described sustained partnership between the Nigerian Army and the College as critical to national security, noting that the NDC plays a strategic role in training personnel drawn not only from the Armed Forces but also from Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs). He commended the Commandant’s efforts to strengthen and modernise the College’s curriculum.

According to him, continuous training and capacity building are essential in keeping pace with emerging security concepts. He stressed that national security has become a shared responsibility that extends beyond the Armed Forces and other security agencies, requiring an inclusive approach that integrates key government institutions.

Lieutenant General Shaibu noted that adapting training programmes to reflect contemporary security realities would enhance the nation’s ability to safeguard its territory and respond effectively to complex threats.

Earlier, Rear Admiral Ahmed praised the COAS for his firm and proactive leadership in tackling security challenges nationwide. He observed that the changing security environment had necessitated a review and adjustment of the College’s curriculum to better prepare participants for present and future demands.

The Commandant also sought the COAS’s input, drawing on his experience as a former student and Directing Staff at the institution. He expressed appreciation to the COAS and other Service Chiefs for their sustained support to the National Defence College.
