President Bola Tinubu has expressed condolences to the Government and people of Ogun State, as well as the Onabanjo family, over the death of Chief Lucia Onabanjo, former First Lady of the state and matriarch of the Onabanjo family.
The condolence message was signed by Mr Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
Chief Onabanjo, wife of the late first civilian Governor of Ogun State, Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo, passed away on Monday, January 12, at the age of 101.
In a statement, the President sympathised with the family, friends, and associates of the deceased, describing her as a compassionate and selfless woman whose life positively impacted her community, Ogun State, and the nation at large.
President Tinubu noted that the widespread tributes following her passing attested to her lifelong commitment to charity and service to humanity. He particularly commended her steadfast support for her husband during his tenure as governor between 1979 and 1983, as well as her strong advocacy for children’s welfare and the empowerment of women.
“Lucia Onabanjo’s support for her husband while he served as Ogun State Governor was commendable, and her keen interest in issues affecting children and women was exemplary,” the President said.
He urged the Ogun State Government and the Onabanjo family to immortalise her memory by sustaining and promoting her legacy of love, charity, and concern for the poor and vulnerable.
President Tinubu also prayed for the peaceful repose of her soul and for strength and comfort for her family during the period of mourning.
