UNIMAID debunks claims linking students to insurgency

The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) has dismissed as false and misleading a viral video circulating on social media that alleges the arrest of some of its students over purported links to the Boko Haram insurgency.

Reacting to the claims, the university management described the video as baseless and capable of creating unnecessary fear, tension and misunderstanding among members of the public. It stressed that the allegations did not emanate from any recognised security agency or government authority.

In a statement issued on Tuesday in Maiduguri, the Registrar of the university, Ahmad Lawan, said internal verification and consultations with relevant authorities confirmed that no student of the institution is under investigation or detention for involvement in terrorist activities.

Lawan reaffirmed the university’s zero-tolerance stance on extremism, violence and all forms of criminality, noting that UNIMAID has consistently worked in partnership with security agencies and community stakeholders to promote peace, safety and stability in the North-East.

He added that the institution remains a reputable centre of learning, populated by responsible and disciplined students whose primary focus is academic excellence, research and personal development.

The university cautioned against the spread of unverified and sensational information, urging social media users, media organisations, parents and guardians to rely solely on credible and official sources for information concerning the institution.

UNIMAID further reassured the public of its unwavering commitment to moral discipline, national unity and the production of graduates who contribute positively to society, while calling for calm and responsible information sharing.
