Governor Dikko Umaru Radda of Katsina State officially launched the Katsina State Community Watch Corps during a significant ceremony aimed at augmenting the concerted efforts of security agencies in tackling the menace of armed banditry and kidnapping within the state.
The inauguration event, which marked the graduation and commissioning of the first cohort comprising 1,456 extensively trained individuals enlisted to serve in the corps, took place in Katsina. Governor Radda emphasized that these trainees underwent rigorous training conducted by seasoned military and police personnel. This comprehensive training equipped them with essential skills in intelligence gathering and combat tactics, enabling them to confront armed bandits effectively.
In a move to enhance the operational capabilities of the Community Watch Corps, the state government provided crucial support by delivering 68 Hilux vehicles and motorcycles to facilitate their patrols into the remote and vulnerable areas of their respective communities.
Governor Radda further disclosed that the selection process for members of the Community Watch Corps was meticulously carried out, drawing individuals from each ward within the Local Government Areas that have grappled with persistent armed banditry and other security challenges across the state.
Addressing the corps members, Governor Radda urged them to adopt a proactive stance and be perpetually prepared to collaborate closely with the police, military, Department of State Services (DSS), and civil defense operatives. Their duties will encompass surveillance, information sharing, and the confronting of bandits, kidnappers, informants, armed robbers, and other criminal elements.
The governor expressed his profound concern by highlighting that 24 out of the 34 Local Government Areas within the state are currently contending with various forms of security challenges. This stark reality prompted the state government to take decisive measures, focusing on preemptive actions against these security threats.
The distinguished occasion garnered the presence of notable dignitaries, including former President Muhammadu Buhari and six other governors from the Northwest geopolitical zone, alongside Governor Mai-mala Buni of Yobe State. Following the ceremony, the Northwest State governors convened a closed-door security meeting at the Government House in Katsina to discuss pressing security matters of regional significance.
The launch of the Katsina State Community Watch Corps marks a significant step forward in the ongoing efforts to address security concerns within the state. The collaborative approach, as demonstrated by the involvement of various stakeholders, reflects a collective commitment to ensuring the safety and security of Katsina State and its residents in the face of prevailing security challenges.
