NAF trains young officers in strategic communication

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has commenced a three-month Basic Information Young Officers Course (BIYOC) to equip junior officers with the skills required to operate effectively in an information-driven and perception-sensitive modern warfare environment.

The pioneering course, which began on January 18, 2026, is being conducted at the School of Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air Force Institute of Administrative Management (NAFIAM), Kaduna. It has 11 participants, comprising 10 Flying Officers and one Pilot Officer drawn from various NAF units across the country.

The initiative reflects the training-centred vision of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Kelvin Aneke, DFS, whose Command Philosophy identifies capacity development as a key enabler of operational effectiveness. This focus is particularly relevant in contemporary warfare, where information and perception management have emerged as critical operational domains.

According to the NAF, the BIYOC represents a deliberate institutional shift towards developing in-service capacity that aligns with the Service’s operational, doctrinal and institutional requirements. The course is designed to strengthen the ability of young officers to support operations through effective communication and narrative management.

As part of the programme, the Director of Public Relations and Information at Headquarters NAF, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, on January 21, 2026, delivered an interactive lecture to participants, urging them to approach the training with intellectual rigour. He emphasised that modern military communication now extends beyond traditional journalism, media engagement, scripting, photography and videography to the strategic shaping of narratives in support of military operations.

In his remarks, the Commandant of NAFIAM, Air Commodore Isaiah Taiwo, commended the engagement, noting that effective communication remains critical to mission success in contemporary military operations.

The commencement of BIYOC underscores the Nigerian Air Force’s strategic and institutionalised effort to provide tailored, sustainable and mission-oriented training aimed at enhancing professionalism, strengthening civil–military relations and reinforcing public trust in the Service.
