Amnesty International says Lamurde protest victim dies after weeks in coma

Amnesty International Nigeria has reported the death of Destiny Gibson, one of the victims of the military’s response to a peaceful women’s protest in Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State, describing the incident as another case of excessive use of force by security personnel.

In a statement, the rights group said Gibson died on Tuesday after spending several weeks in a coma following injuries sustained during the protest on December 8, 2025. The demonstration was organised by women protesting the prolonged communal conflict between the Bachama and Chobo ethnic groups in the area.

According to Amnesty International, Gibson was working at her restaurant when she was struck by bullets during the military intervention. The organisation accused the military of acting with “utter disregard for the sanctity of life,” adding that authorities had issued denials despite what it described as overwhelming evidence of wrongdoing.

The group said at least eight women were killed on the day of the protest, while others later died from their injuries. Several protesters reportedly sustained gunshot wounds to different parts of their bodies.

Amnesty International stated that the Lamurde incident reflects a broader pattern in which security forces, when deployed to address communal clashes, often resort to excessive force, resulting in additional deaths and destruction.

The organisation further criticised Nigerian authorities for failing to conduct prompt, independent and transparent investigations into alleged human rights violations, warning that such lapses undermine the rule of law and erode public confidence in state institutions.
