Nigeria, South Korea launch Afrobeats–K-pop music collaboration

Nigeria and South Korea are deepening cooperation in the creative economy with a pioneering Afrobeats–K-pop collaborative album currently in development, underscoring growing cultural ties between both countries.

The initiative took shape in Abuja during a landmark live production concert that brought together artistes and producers from Nigeria and South Korea to experiment with a fusion of Afrobeats and K-pop.

The event, titled “K Music Production x Afrobeats,” was hosted by the Korean Cultural Center in Nigeria (KCCN) and featured Korean vocal coach Seo Yena, music producer and composer Lee Haneung, and Nigerian Afrobeats artiste FirstKlaz, who jointly recorded and performed during the session.

The collaboration highlighted the expanding role of cultural diplomacy in bilateral relations and the rising global influence of Afrobeats, which continues to shape contemporary pop music across Asia, Europe and North America.

Speaking at the event, Seo Yena said her interest in Afrobeats was sparked during a 2024 visit to Nigeria as part of a KCCN vocal training programme, describing the experience as transformative.

“That was my first real contact with Nigerian music,” she said. “Working with Nigerian singers made me curious about Afrobeats, so I began exploring how it could connect authentically with Korean music.”

She explained that the project intentionally blended the relaxed rhythms of Afrobeats with the structured vocal delivery and emotional intensity characteristic of K-pop.

“Afrobeats has a calm, flowing feel, while Korean pop emphasises clarity and strong climaxes. Our goal was to let both identities shine without overpowering each other,” she added.

Producer Lee Haneung described the partnership as both a creative challenge and an important step toward fostering a more balanced global music ecosystem.

“Afrobeats is now a major force in global music, and its influence is already evident in K-pop,” he said. “Rather than simply borrowing, I wanted to understand Afrobeats at its source and create something that sincerely respects both cultures.”

Nigerian artiste FirstKlaz said he welcomed the collaboration, noting his long-standing interest in Korean music and describing the creative process as seamless.

“I love K-pop, so I was excited when the invitation came,” he said. “The studio sessions were full of energy, and the collaboration felt very natural.”

Although no release date has been announced, KCCN confirmed that the joint track is being prepared for commercial release and forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen partnerships between Korean producers and Nigerian artistes.

According to the Centre, the initiative aligns with efforts by both countries to expand their creative industries, promote cultural exchange and position music as a driver of youth employment, innovation and global engagement.

As Afrobeats continues its global ascent and K-pop further expands its international reach, the Abuja collaboration marks a new chapter in cross-continental creativity, rooted in mutual respect and shared artistic growth.
