Customs, OPHK strengthen partnership on border security in North-East

The Nigeria Customs Service has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening inter-agency collaboration with the Headquarters Joint Task Force (North-East), Operation HADIN KAI, to enhance border security management in Borno and Yobe states.

The Custom Area Controller in charge of Borno and Yobe, Controller Abdullahi Mohammed Idris, made this known during a courtesy visit to the OPHK Headquarters on Thursday, February 12, 2026.

Speaking during the visit, Controller Idris said the engagement was aimed at strengthening synergy and consolidating the existing cordial relationship between the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the Nigeria Customs Service. He noted that effective border governance requires sustained cooperation among security stakeholders, particularly in the North-East where cross-border threats remain prevalent.

He disclosed that the Service has deployed Geo-Partial Surveillance Technology across Nigeria’s land and maritime borders to enhance monitoring and rapid response capabilities. According to him, the visit also sought the guidance and operational support of OPHK as a critical security partner in Borno and Yobe.

The Area Controller acknowledged the Nigerian Army’s role in the establishment of the Nigerian Customs Service Staff College and its continued support in capacity building for Customs personnel. He expressed appreciation to the Theatre Commander for the warm reception and voiced optimism that the engagement would further strengthen operational ties and bolster border security.

In his remarks, the Theatre Commander, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, commended the Nigeria Customs Service for its pivotal role in safeguarding the nation’s borders and facilitating lawful trade.

He underscored the importance of a multi-agency approach to national security, in line with the Service Chiefs’ command philosophy that prioritises jointness and synergy among security agencies. He noted that no single agency can effectively address Nigeria’s complex and evolving security challenges in isolation.

Major General Abubakar identified porous borders as a persistent security concern, warning that they contribute to the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, with adverse implications for border communities. He stressed that the Nigeria Customs Service plays a vital role in curbing such threats.

The Theatre Commander further lauded Customs personnel deployed within OPHK for their professionalism and contributions to the Joint Task Force’s mandate, reaffirming OPHK’s commitment to sustained collaboration.

The visit concluded with the signing of the visitors’ register and presentation of souvenirs.
