President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz have agreed to deepen bilateral cooperation between Nigeria and Germany, with a focus on security, power, and railway infrastructure.
The agreement emerged during a telephone conversation on Wednesday, in which the leaders also discussed collaboration in creative arts and skills development. President Tinubu highlighted Nigeria’s need for support in power transmission under the Presidential Power Initiative, to which Chancellor Merz responded that Siemens would provide technical assistance while Deutsche Bank is willing to finance the project.
Both leaders expressed concern over insecurity in the Sahel region. President Tinubu called for the provision of used helicopters to enhance intelligence and reconnaissance capabilities, describing the corridor as “bad and in need of support.”
Diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Germany span over 65 years. Chancellor Merz welcomed the imminent arrival of Nigeria’s new ambassador to Germany and emphasized the role of the arts, proposing the establishment of a Great Museum of African Arts.
The call, which lasted from 2:01 pm to 2:10 pm, underscores ongoing efforts to strengthen strategic partnerships and foster socio-economic development between the two countries.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy), provided the briefing.
