Police heighten vigilance over Middle East tensions

The Nigeria Police Force has reassured citizens of sustained security vigilance amid evolving geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and their potential global implications.

In a statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. on behalf of the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, the Force affirmed its unwavering commitment to the protection of lives, property and national peace. It emphasised that Nigeria remains stable, with the internal security situation firmly under control.

According to the statement, the Acting IGP has directed Commissioners of Police across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to intensify proactive, intelligence-led policing measures nationwide. Particular focus has been placed on the North West, North East and North Central zones.

The directives include heightened surveillance and intelligence gathering, strengthened collaboration with traditional and religious leaders, increased visibility policing around worship centres and public spaces, and swift action against any individual or group seeking to exploit global developments to incite unrest or sectarian tension.

The Force stressed that Nigeria would not serve as a theatre for foreign conflicts, warning that any attempt to import external ideological or religious tensions into the country would be met with the full weight of the law.

The Acting IGP also urged community leaders to continue promoting peaceful coexistence, while calling on citizens to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding. Members of the public were encouraged to report suspicious activities to the nearest police formation.
