Nigerian Army probes alleged child abuse in Kontagora cantonment

The Nigerian Army has commenced an investigation into an alleged case of child abuse reported at the military cantonment in Kontagora, Niger State.

According to statement signed by Assistant Director, Army Public Relations at the Nigerian Army Training Centre Major Godfrey Anebi Abakpa, the incident, which reportedly occurred on March 4, 2026, was brought to light after a soldier living nearby allegedly heard the cries of a distressed child from a neighbouring apartment within the cantonment.

Abakpa said the soldier reportedly gained access to the residence and discovered a seven-year-old girl being physically assaulted by two sisters identified as the child’s relatives and custodians.

According to preliminary findings, the child was allegedly punished over concerns about her earlier whereabouts. Initial reports also suggest possible neglect, including the denial of meals and restrictions on the use of basic household facilities. Eyewitness accounts further indicated that similar incidents may have occurred previously despite earlier warnings.

Sources said the child had been living with her uncle’s family in the cantonment following the death of her father. She was reportedly brought to the barracks to receive care and continue her education.

Following the report, the Commander of the Nigerian Army Training Centre (NATRAC), AGL Haruna, directed the NATRAC Military Police to launch a comprehensive investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the case.

The child was immediately taken to the Kontagora Military Cantonment Medical Centre for medical evaluation and is said to be in stable condition.

Pending the outcome of the investigation, temporary custody of the child has been granted to another family within the cantonment that volunteered to provide care and support.

Authorities at the training centre reaffirmed their commitment to the welfare and protection of children and dependants of military personnel, assuring the public that appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken in line with military regulations once the investigation is concluded.
