The Borno State Police Command has confirmed that normalcy has been restored in Maiduguri following a series of deadly improvised explosive device (IED) attacks that rocked the city on Monday evening.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, the Command disclosed that the explosions occurred at about 7:24 p.m. on March 16, 2026, at three locations: the Maiduguri Monday Market, the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office Flyover.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the coordinated attacks were carried out by suspected suicide bombers. A total of 23 persons were confirmed dead, while 108 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Security agencies, including Police Tactical Units, the military, and other joint security operatives, were immediately deployed to the affected areas. The sites were secured and cordoned off, while personnel from the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit conducted comprehensive sweep operations to rule out additional threats.
The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, visited the scenes to assess the situation and ongoing response efforts. He expressed condolences to the victims and their families, assuring residents of the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
Emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency and the State Emergency Management Agency, evacuated the injured to nearby medical facilities, where they are receiving treatment.
The police stated that calm has been restored across the affected areas, with enhanced security presence and surveillance operations now in place throughout Maiduguri and its environs to prevent further incidents.
Authorities added that investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attacks and to apprehend those responsible.
Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or objects to security agencies, as efforts continue to ensure public safety across the state.
