Tinubu donates salaries to Armed forces welfare fund

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the establishment of a dedicated welfare fund to support members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, including personnel wounded in active service and families of fallen soldiers.

The President made the announcement on Sunday as part of activities marking his 74th birthday, describing the initiative as a tribute to the courage, sacrifice and service of military personnel.

He directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to create a special account for the fund, which is expected to provide targeted assistance to injured service members, as well as widows, widowers and children of deceased personnel.

As part of his personal commitment, Tinubu pledged to donate all his salaries since assuming office as seed funding for the initiative, underscoring his resolve to prioritise the welfare of those who have contributed to the nation’s security.

The President also called on state governors, members of the National Assembly, the private sector and other stakeholders to support the fund, noting that further details on its structure and implementation would be made public in due course.

He emphasised that the initiative reflects a national obligation to care for military personnel and their families, irrespective of existing insurance schemes available within the armed forces.

According to him, supporting service members is not an act of charity but a collective duty, stressing the need for sustained care, dignity and institutional backing for those who serve the country.

Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the welfare framework for military personnel and ensuring that their sacrifices are adequately recognised and supported.
