Troops foil attacks, arrest impostors in Plateau

Troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation ENDURING PEACE, have recorded significant operational gains in separate security operations across Plateau State, neutralising threats and arresting suspects in Jos North Local Government Area and Wase Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the Media Information Officer, Chinonso Polycarp Oteh, the troops responded to a distress call late Thursday night over sporadic gunfire in Dutse Uku, a community within Jos North.

At about 11:45 p.m., security personnel intercepted and arrested two individuals allegedly impersonating security operatives. The suspects, dressed in tactical black uniforms, were reportedly involved in arson attacks on residential properties and acts of violence within the community.

The statement noted that the suspects are currently in custody, while two injured persons rescued from the scene were evacuated to a medical facility and are said to be in stable condition.

Military authorities said the arrests counter allegations of security force involvement in the unrest, indicating that criminal elements disguised as security personnel were responsible for some of the attacks.

In a related development, troops deployed to Karem in Wase Local Government Area engaged a group of suspected terrorists reportedly moving in large numbers on motorcycles. The insurgents were forced to retreat following sustained military pressure, while three of them were neutralised during the encounter.

The military attributed the operational successes to the recent deployment of additional troops, including specialised counter-terrorism units, approved by the Chief of Army Staff to reinforce security in volatile areas of the state.

According to the statement, the enhanced deployment has strengthened the security architecture in affected communities and improved the military’s ability to respond swiftly to emerging threats.

The Joint Task Force reiterated its commitment to restoring peace and maintaining law and order, warning that criminal elements operating within the state would be decisively dealt with.

Residents were also urged to remain vigilant and support ongoing security efforts by providing timely information on suspicious activities to relevant authorities.
