Amnesty International has strongly condemned a military airstrike that reportedly killed more than 100 people at Jilli Futchimiram in Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe State.
According to witnesses, three military jets carried out the strike on a local market on Monday. Medical sources at Geidam General Hospital said at least 35 people with severe injuries had been admitted to the emergency unit as of the time of reporting.
In a statement, Amnesty International described the use of air power in such circumstances as unlawful and disproportionate. The organisation argued that deploying aerial bombardment in a civilian setting does not meet acceptable standards of law enforcement and raises serious concerns about the protection of civilian lives.
The group further characterised the incident as an example of excessive use of force, alleging that it reflects a troubling pattern of military tactics being applied in internal security operations.
Amnesty International called on Nigerian authorities to conduct an immediate, independent, and impartial investigation into the incident and ensure that any individuals found responsible are held accountable in accordance with the law.
