Police arrest officer over Effurun shooting

The Delta State Police Command has arrested and transferred a police officer to Force Headquarters for disciplinary action over the fatal shooting of a suspect in Effurun.

Police spokesperson Bright Edafe confirmed that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure accountability in the case.

The Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, condemned the incident, describing it as an extra-judicial killing that violates the core principles of the Nigeria Police Force.

The victim, Mene Ogidi, 28, was reportedly apprehended on April 26, 2026, while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition in Effurun.

Police operatives from the Area Command Effurun had responded to credible intelligence from members of the public and moved to take the suspect into custody. However, the officer leading the team, Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm in breach of operational guidelines, resulting in the suspect’s death.

The Command stated that the officer’s actions contravened Force Order 237 and established Standard Operating Procedures governing the use of firearms.

Following the incident, the Commissioner directed the immediate arrest of the officer, who was subsequently moved to the State Headquarters in Asaba before being transferred to Force Headquarters Abuja to face the Force Disciplinary Committee.

According to the Command, the officer has been formally queried and will undergo disciplinary proceedings, including possible prosecution.

The police reiterated their commitment to upholding the rule of law, human rights, and professional standards, stressing a zero-tolerance stance on misconduct and extra-judicial actions.

Oyeniyi extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that justice would be pursued.

The Command also urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding as investigations continue.
