The Nigerian Navy has uncovered and dismantled a suspected staging camp linked to hostile activities within the Rivers–Bayelsa creek axis following intensified surveillance operations in the area.
The discovery was made by personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) SOROH deployed around the Soku general area after suspicious movement by occupants of a high-powered speedboat drew attention during routine patrols along the waterways.
The vessel, fitted with a 200-horsepower engine, was observed conveying six individuals dressed in unverified uniforms while transiting from Sangama Community towards Russia Community Creek near the Olowaseri axis of Bayelsa State. The group was later seen offloading three persons under suspicious circumstances before the boat retreated into adjoining creeks, prompting a follow-up naval operation.
Subsequent exploitation of the area led to the discovery of a concealed hideout and suspected staging camp within the creek network.
During the operation, naval personnel recovered 50 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition hidden inside a water container, along with other materials believed to be linked to hostile or unlawful activities.
Additional items found at the site included old vehicle batteries, assorted electrical wiring, and containers holding unidentified foul-smelling substances secured with red straps. Preliminary assessments suggest the materials may be associated with attempts to fabricate improvised explosive devices or facilitate pipeline vandalism and sabotage activities.
The camp and recovered items were destroyed to prevent further criminal use, while the ammunition and selected exhibits remain in custody for further investigation.
The Navy said the operation underscores its sustained intelligence-driven patrols and heightened surveillance across strategic waterways and creek systems within the Niger Delta.
According to the Director of Naval Information, Abiodun Folorunsho, a Navy Captain, the service remains committed to denying criminal elements any operational foothold within the maritime environment through proactive security operations.
