The Headquarters of 6 Brigade Nigerian Army/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke has dismissed reports circulating on social media that linked the death of the Commanding Officer of 20 Model Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Gabriel Okoye, to a bandit attack or operational incident.
In a statement issued by the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Umar Muhammad, the Brigade described the reports as misleading and inaccurate, clarifying that the senior officer died on June 13, 2026, following a brief illness.
According to the statement, Lieutenant Colonel Okoye’s death was not connected to any security operation or attack, contrary to claims made on some social media platforms. The Army noted that the circumstances surrounding his passing were clear and had already been communicated through official channels.
The Brigade expressed concern over the spread of unverified information, stating that speculation about the officer’s death was not only misleading but also insensitive to his family and colleagues.
It further warned that the circulation of false narratives could create unnecessary anxiety among military personnel, their families, and the general public. The Army regretted that some individuals and media platforms chose to publish unsubstantiated claims without verifying the facts through official sources.
The statement urged members of the public and media practitioners to disregard the reports and refrain from sharing information that could undermine public confidence or disrespect the memory of the deceased officer.
Reaffirming its commitment to transparency, professionalism, and responsible information management, the Headquarters of 6 Brigade encouraged the public to seek clarification through official military communication channels.
The Nigerian Army paid tribute to Lieutenant Colonel Okoye, describing him as a dedicated and professional officer who served the nation with honour. It added that the Army continues to mourn his passing and prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul.
