ECOWAS Court Unveils Digital Case Management Platform

ECOWAS Court Unveils Digital Case Management Platform

The Community Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will on Monday, June 29, 2026, officially launch its Electronic Case Management System (ECMS), marking a major milestone in the Court’s digital transformation and efforts to strengthen justice delivery across West Africa.

The launch, scheduled to take place at the Court’s headquarters in Abuja, is themed “Advancing Digital Justice: Enhancing Access, Efficiency and Transparency through Electronic Case Management.” It is expected to attract heads of ECOWAS institutions, government representatives, diplomats, legal practitioners, development partners, civil society organisations, academics and members of the media.

The ceremony will be conducted in a hybrid format, allowing both physical and virtual participation, with simultaneous interpretation in English, French and Portuguese to facilitate wider regional engagement.

According to the Court, the ECMS is a secure, multilingual, web-based platform designed to modernise judicial administration by digitising every stage of case management—from electronic filing to final judgment. The system incorporates electronic filing, digital document management, real-time case tracking, automated registry processes, virtual hearings and secure online access to case information for judges, registry officials, legal practitioners, litigants and other authorised users.

The platform is the culmination of an extensive development process involving software design, testing, data migration, user training and pilot implementation, paving the way for full operational deployment.

The Court said the introduction of the ECMS would significantly improve judicial efficiency by reducing reliance on paper-based processes, streamlining case administration, strengthening data security and enhancing transparency and accountability in judicial proceedings.

The digital platform is also expected to broaden access to justice by enabling litigants and legal practitioners across ECOWAS member states to file cases, monitor proceedings and interact with the Court electronically, irrespective of their geographical location.

Participants at the launch will witness live demonstrations of the platform’s key features while engaging in discussions on the growing role of digital technologies in improving justice delivery across the region.

The ECMS forms part of the Court’s 2026–2030 Strategic Plan and reflects its commitment to leveraging technology to improve institutional performance, enhance operational efficiency and expand access to justice throughout the ECOWAS Community.

With the deployment of the new platform, the ECOWAS Court joins a growing number of regional and international judicial institutions embracing digital innovation to deliver faster, more transparent and more accessible justice.
