The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) has condemned the killing of the Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Benue State Chapter, Ardo Risku Mohammed, describing the incident as a major setback to ongoing peacebuilding efforts in the state.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Director-General of the Institute, Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, said the late MACBAN chairman was widely respected for his commitment to dialogue, reconciliation and peaceful coexistence among the diverse ethnic and religious communities in Benue State.
According to the Institute, Mohammed’s death is not only a personal tragedy but also a significant blow to efforts aimed at fostering sustainable peace in a state that continues to grapple with recurring communal conflicts and insecurity.
The IPCR noted that the deceased had distinguished himself as a bridge-builder and advocate of peaceful engagement, earning widespread recognition for promoting dialogue at a time of heightened tensions.
“The Institute believes that individuals who dedicate their lives to promoting peace and building bridges between communities should be protected and encouraged, not subjected to violence. The killing of such a prominent peace actor undermines collective efforts to achieve lasting stability,” the statement said.
While condemning the attack, the Institute commended security agencies for their swift response, particularly the reported arrest of about 10 suspects linked to the killing.
It described the arrests as an indication of the commitment of law enforcement authorities to ensuring that those responsible are identified and prosecuted.
However, the Institute stressed that arrests alone would not be sufficient, calling for a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation to uncover all those directly or indirectly involved in the murder.
The IPCR maintained that everyone connected to the crime must be brought to justice in accordance with the law, stressing that accountability is essential to restoring public confidence and safeguarding the gains of ongoing peacebuilding initiatives.
The Institute also appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups and civil society organisations to remain calm and discourage any actions capable of escalating tensions or triggering reprisals.
Reaffirming its mandate as Nigeria’s foremost government institution dedicated to peacebuilding and conflict resolution, the IPCR pledged to continue supporting dialogue, mediation and confidence-building initiatives aimed at strengthening peaceful coexistence and national cohesion.
The Institute further extended its condolences to the family of the deceased, the leadership and members of MACBAN, the people of Benue State and all those affected by the loss, urging Nigerians to honour Mohammed’s legacy by remaining committed to peace, justice and national unity.
