Heineken Lokpobiri anticipates Kaduna refinery’s completion by Q4 2024

Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, the Honorable Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), has announced that the Kaduna Refinery and Petrochemicals Company Limited (KRPC) is projected to become operational again by the fourth quarter of 2024. Senator Lokpobiri made this declaration during an inspection visit to the Kaduna Refinery & Petrochemicals, where he assessed the ongoing quick-fix project’s progress.

Expressing his optimism, Lokpobiri emphasized the substantial progress he witnessed during the tour and conveyed his confidence that the refinery would be fully operational by the end of 2024. He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to facilitating the timely completion of the project and holding all key stakeholders involved in the rehabilitation of the nation’s refineries accountable.

The Minister stressed the urgency of reviving the refinery to bolster the country’s economic well-being and energy security, both of which are integral to sustainable development.

Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., echoed these sentiments and assured the Minister that the refinery’s fuel plant would be operational by the end of 2024. Kyari noted that significant efforts were underway, with the contractor already mobilized to the site and the necessary equipment in place for the quick-fix operations.

“We have every reason to believe that we will secure the required financing to see this project through to its completion. Our initial goal is to achieve a quick fix, enabling us to produce 60,000 barrels per day, thus generating revenue and paving the way for further enhancements to bring the refinery up to its full capacity. This coincides with the completion of the Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) pipeline, ensuring a reliable infrastructure for product delivery,” stated the GCEO.

The inspection tour followed the 14th Refineries Rehabilitation Steering Committee Meeting and involved the participation of Adedapo Segun, Executive Vice President, Downstream; Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, Executive Vice President, Upstream; Managing Directors of the three refineries; and various other committee members.
