Security is key to national prosperity, says Fubara at army day gala

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has declared that security remains the cornerstone of national prosperity, emphasizing that sustainable development, economic growth and democratic stability cannot thrive without peace and the unwavering commitment of the nation’s armed forces.

Speaking at the gala night marking the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration in Port Harcourt on Sunday, Governor Fubara commended the Nigerian Army for its steadfast dedication to safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity and confronting evolving security challenges.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Dagogo Wokoma, the governor said the country’s progress is anchored on the courage, professionalism and sacrifices of military personnel.

“Security remains the vital foundation of any prosperous society, and a nation sleeps in peace because brave men and women stand awake in its defence,” he stated.

Fubara paid glowing tribute to fallen soldiers, describing them as national heroes whose sacrifices continue to preserve Nigeria’s unity, sovereignty and democratic ideals.

“We honour those who have paid the ultimate price and stand in solidarity with the families they left behind. Their sacrifices continue to preserve our nation’s unity, protect our territorial integrity, and sustain our democracy,” he said.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies, noting that the partnership between the Rivers State Government and the Army’s 6 Division has significantly improved security across the state.

According to him, the enhanced security environment has boosted public confidence, encouraged investment and created a more conducive atmosphere for economic and social development.

In his remarks, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, described the annual Nigerian Army Day Celebration as more than a ceremonial event, saying it serves as a platform to honour the dedication of troops, deepen civil-military relations and deliver meaningful community development projects.

He disclosed that the Army renovated community secondary schools and installed solar-powered boreholes in parts of Rivers State as part of activities commemorating the 2026 celebration.

Shaibu stressed that enduring national security requires sustained cooperation between the military, other security agencies and the civilian population.

“As an Army, we recognize the indispensable role of the people in supporting our efforts to achieve national security objectives within a joint, multifaceted, and dynamic security environment. Enduring security can only be achieved through a strong partnership between the military, other security agencies, and the communities we are sworn to protect,” he said.

The Army Chief assured Nigerians that the military would continue to deploy both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies in addressing insecurity while strengthening collaboration with intelligence agencies and local communities to create a safer environment for national development.

He also expressed appreciation to the Rivers State Government and residents for their continued support, urging Nigerians to sustain their confidence in the Armed Forces and actively support efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and national stability.

The gala night attracted senior military officers, government officials and other dignitaries, and featured cultural displays by the Rivers State Cultural Troupe alongside musical performances by popular artistes Mr P and Duncan Mighty, bringing the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration to a colourful conclusion.
