The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has confirmed the death of 10 police officers during a fierce encounter with suspected bandits in Kebbi State, vowing to sustain operations against the fleeing criminals.
The incident occurred at about 9:25 a.m. on Monday, August 10, 2026, along the Rafin Makuku axis of Sakaba Local Government Area, when police operatives intercepted a heavily armed group of suspected bandits moving between Zamfara and Kebbi states.
According to the Force, at least 17 suspected bandits were neutralised during the encounter, while four motorcycles belonging to the attackers were destroyed.
However, 10 police personnel were killed in the gun battle, while two others sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical attention. Two civilians were also killed during the engagement.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, expressed profound grief over the loss of the officers and extended his condolences to their families and loved ones.
Disu described the deaths as a painful loss to the Police Force and the nation, stressing that the officers paid the ultimate price in the course of protecting citizens and defending the country.
He assured the bereaved families that the sacrifices of the fallen personnel would not be forgotten, pledging that their service and commitment would continue to be honoured by the Force.
The remains of the deceased officers have been conveyed to Birnin Kebbi, while security forces have brought the area under control.
The Police said additional personnel have been deployed to the area to reinforce security, sustain the ongoing operation and pursue fleeing members of the criminal group.
The Force also assured the families of the deceased officers and the injured personnel of continued support, stressing that efforts would be intensified to bring the fleeing suspects to justice.
The Police urged Nigerians to support security agencies with credible information that could assist ongoing operations against banditry and other criminal activities.
