At least 11 people have been killed in a fresh attack on Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State, amid growing concerns over escalating violence and displacement across the state.
The attack, which occurred on Thursday, reportedly saw armed gunmen invade the community in large numbers, killing residents and forcing others to flee for safety.
Several people who attempted to escape the assault are reportedly still missing, raising fears that the death toll could rise as efforts continue to establish the full extent of the attack.
The latest incident has triggered another wave of displacement, with residents abandoning their homes and seeking refuge in safer locations.
Benue has in recent years faced repeated attacks by armed groups, resulting in widespread displacement and deepening humanitarian concerns across affected communities.
The renewed violence has also heightened calls for urgent intervention by the Federal and Benue State governments to protect vulnerable communities, secure displaced populations and prevent further loss of lives.
Humanitarian concerns are particularly acute, with an estimated 500,000 people reportedly displaced by insecurity across the state. Many displaced persons are said to be living in overcrowded and difficult conditions, with inadequate access to clean water, sanitation, food and healthcare.
Stakeholders have therefore urged the authorities to intensify security operations, strengthen early-warning and community protection mechanisms, and provide immediate humanitarian assistance to victims of the violence.
The latest attack underscores the urgent need for coordinated security and humanitarian measures to prevent further deterioration of the situation and avert a wider humanitarian crisis in Benue State.
