MSF marks 30 years of humanitarian service in Nigeria

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has marked 30 years of humanitarian medical intervention in Nigeria, reflecting on three decades of providing healthcare to millions of people affected by disease outbreaks, displacement, emergencies and limited access to medical services.

MSF commenced operations in Nigeria in 1996 and has since maintained a frontline presence in some of the country’s most challenging humanitarian and public health emergencies.

The organisation said its three-decade journey had been defined by sustained efforts to bring essential medical services closer to vulnerable communities, particularly populations affected by crises and those facing barriers to healthcare.

Marking the anniversary, MSF said the milestone provided an opportunity to reflect on its longstanding partnership with Nigerian communities and healthcare workers, as well as the millions of people reached through its humanitarian activities.

Over the years, the organisation’s interventions in Nigeria have included emergency healthcare, responses to disease outbreaks and humanitarian crises, and medical support for vulnerable populations in areas where access to essential services remains limited.

MSF said its work had been shaped by the need to respond rapidly to emergencies that can overwhelm communities and place additional pressure on an already challenged healthcare system.

The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to the principle that access to healthcare should not be determined by privilege or circumstance, noting that the belief had guided its efforts to reach people in need, particularly vulnerable groups and children.

According to MSF, three decades of operations have also provided valuable experience in responding to Nigeria’s changing humanitarian and public health landscape, including outbreaks of disease, displacement and other emergencies that expose vulnerable populations to heightened health risks.

The organisation said the experience gained over the years had strengthened its resolve to work alongside communities and healthcare professionals in responding to medical emergencies and improving access to essential healthcare.

MSF added that it would continue its humanitarian activities in Nigeria, working with communities and health workers to respond to emergencies and support access to medical services.

The anniversary comes against the backdrop of continuing healthcare challenges in Nigeria, particularly among populations affected by poverty, displacement, emergencies and geographic barriers to medical care.

MSF said the millions of people reached during its 30 years in Nigeria remained at the centre of the anniversary, underscoring the humanitarian focus of its longstanding presence in the country.

From its arrival in Nigeria in 1996 to its ongoing emergency responses, the organisation said its mission remained focused on reaching people in need with medical care when and where it is required.

MSF said that commitment would continue to guide its humanitarian work in Nigeria as it begins another chapter of its operations in the country.
