- Sandbag reinforcement underway to stabilise site as Air Force pledges safe, methodical operation
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has intensified recovery operations at the site of the crashed ATR 42-500 aircraft, NAF 931, in Igbokoda, Ondo State, following a significant drop in water levels as the operation entered its 14th day on October 19, 2026.
In a statement Director of Public Relations and Information, Headquarters, Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame said the Service said continuous pumping had substantially reduced the volume of water at the crash site, with recovery personnel working to remove most of the remaining water, subject to prevailing conditions.
It added that efforts were also underway to reinforce the embankment with sandbags to prevent a possible collapse and maintain the stability of the site as dewatering operations continued.
In a situation update, the NAF described the recovery mission as a complex undertaking requiring sustained engineering interventions and extensive dewatering efforts under challenging conditions.
The Service commended the dedication and professionalism of recovery personnel and partner agencies involved in the operation, singling out Hitech Construction Company for its support.
The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, also praised the recovery team for its resilience and commitment, reaffirming the Air Force’s determination to complete the operation safely and methodically.
According to the NAF, the recovery exercise remains critical to supporting the ongoing investigation into the aircraft accident.
The Service acknowledged the anguish of the bereaved families and extended its condolences, assuring them that efforts would continue until the recovery mission was completed.
It also appreciated the patience and cooperation of the Igbokoda community, alongside the continued support of stakeholders involved in the operation.
