NAFDAC busts illegal herbal products factory in Lagos

  • Arrests manager over fake registration number

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered an illegal herbal product manufacturing facility in Agege, Lagos State, following an investigation into herbal products allegedly bearing falsified registration numbers.

The agency disclosed that the operation followed a report published by The Guardian on October 10, 2026, concerning herbal products carrying questionable NAFDAC registration numbers.

According to NAFDAC, its investigative team conducted surveillance after the report and subsequently discovered three variants of Asheitu Adams Bitters bearing NAFDAC Registration Number A7-1827L.

Verification through the agency’s NAFDAC Automated Product Administration and Monitoring System (NAPAMS) portal revealed that the registration number actually belongs to Greentol Cough Syrup, indicating its fraudulent use on the herbal products.

NAFDAC said the discovery raised concerns about the unauthorised use of an existing product registration number to market herbal preparations, potentially misleading consumers about their regulatory status.

During the operation, the company’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer was reportedly absent, while the company manager was arrested for further interrogation as investigations into the alleged illegal manufacturing activities continued.

The agency reiterated its commitment to combating the production and distribution of unregistered products and the falsification of registration numbers, warning that such practices undermine consumer confidence and pose potential risks to public health.

NAFDAC also called on members of the public to provide credible information about suspected illegal manufacturing facilities and other activities that could compromise the safety and quality of regulated products.

The agency urged anyone with relevant information to contact its call centre on 0800-1-623322 or 0700-1-623322, or send an email to reforms@nafdac.gov.ng.

The operation underscores the importance of regulatory surveillance and public cooperation in identifying suspected counterfeit and illegally manufactured products in Nigeria’s herbal medicine market.
