Igbokoda: NAF recovers black box of crashed aircraft

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has recovered the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) from the ATR-42 aircraft that crashed in Igbokoda, Ondo State, as recovery operations and investigations into the accident continue.

The Air Force said technical teams from the NAF and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) had confirmed that the recovered recorder was intact.

It also disclosed that part of the Flight Data Recorder (FDR), commonly known as the black box, had been retrieved, while efforts were ongoing to locate and recover the remaining portion.

The Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF Headquarters, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, disclosed this in a statement, adding that additional aircraft wreckage, engine components and human remains had also been recovered.

He said recovery operations were continuing in the challenging swamp terrain, with teams working to retrieve outstanding aircraft components and facilitate the necessary technical examinations.

According to him, the investigation is being conducted diligently to ensure comprehensive and evidence-based findings.

The Air Force further disclosed that the handling of recovered human remains was receiving careful attention, with the Directorate of Identification and Classification (DIC) undertaking the necessary procedures to ensure proper identification.

It added that the NAF had maintained engagements with the families of the victims to provide information and support, while discussions with relevant authorities over environmental concerns raised by the host community remained part of the response.

The Air Force appealed for patience and understanding from the public, noting that the recovery and investigation processes required time, careful coordination and professional attention.

It said the objective was not only to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident but also to draw lessons that would strengthen flight safety, improve ongoing air operations and safeguard the lives of military personnel and citizens.

The NAF assured the public that it would continue to provide verified updates as the recovery and investigation progressed.
