NEMA collaborates with UNDP to forge National disaster risk reduction strategic action plan

In a proactive move to fortify Nigeria’s disaster resilience, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is partnering with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the development of a comprehensive National Disaster Risk Reduction Strategic Action Plan. The initiative, prompted by a thorough assessment of Sahel countries, seeks to align with the Sendai Framework while addressing the escalating challenges posed by disasters, particularly those related to climate.

The collaborative effort between NEMA and UNDP stems from the ongoing Sahel Resilience Project, engaging various international organizations. The strategic alliance aims to not only enhance Nigeria’s resilience but also contribute to bolstering the overall resilience of the Sahel Region. This initiative gains paramount importance in the face of the vulnerability of Sahel countries to economic fragility, environmental degradation, extreme weather events, and security threats.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction Strategic Action Plan underscores a holistic approach to disaster risk management, encompassing key elements such as preparedness, mitigation, risk reduction, and adaptation. By aligning with the Sendai Framework, the plan aims to set clear objectives and strategies to reduce disaster risk and enhance resilience.

A pivotal aspect of this collaborative effort is the active involvement of stakeholders from diverse organizations. A workshop held on November 15, 2024, brought together experts and representatives from governmental, non-governmental, and international entities to contribute to the development of this strategic document. The workshop serves as a platform for robust discussions and the exchange of ideas to ensure the plan is comprehensive and reflective of the multifaceted nature of disaster risk in the region.

As the collaboration progresses, the NEMA-UNDP partnership is poised to make a significant impact on Nigeria’s disaster preparedness and response capabilities. The National Disaster Risk Reduction Strategic Action Plan stands as a testament to the commitment of both organizations to proactively address the complex challenges posed by disasters in the Sahel Region and pave the way for a more resilient and secure future.
