In a significant crackdown on cybercrime, the Kaduna Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) apprehended five individuals allegedly involved in internet-related fraud on Monday, November 13, 2023.
The suspects, identified as Favour Itung, Rachael Ande, Zuleiman Haruna, Abubakar Ismaila, and Solomon Olobatoke, were taken into custody without incident at a residential inn and Disney Chicken Eatery in Barnawa, Kaduna. The arrests followed meticulous intelligence gathering about their purported fraudulent activities.
However, the operation took an unexpected turn when six military personnel, who witnessed the arrests at Disney Chicken Eatery, attempted to forcefully release the detained suspects. The intruders, comprising four Air Force personnel—Lawal Abdullahi, Chukwuma Chidi Christian, Alfa Suleiman, and Emmanuel Ekwozor—and two students from the Nigerian Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Chidera Anuba and Joseph Tokula, were subdued and detained by EFCC officials due to the security breach.
Following the incident, leaders from both the EFCC and the Nigerian Air Force engaged in inter-agency communications and discussions to address the security breach. Unfortunately, talks regarding the release of the detained Air Force personnel broke down on Friday, November 17, 2023, when a group of unruly NAF officers stormed the Kaduna Command in a commando-style attempt to liberate their colleagues by force.
Despite the provocation and blatant abuse of power, the EFCC maintained restraint and continued negotiations with the Nigerian Air Force. The detained military personnel were eventually handed over to the NAF Provost after thorough profiling.
The EFCC, in a statement, reassured the public that it remains committed to fulfilling its statutory mandate of combating economic and financial crimes, undeterred by any challenges or hindrances. The incident underscores the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the military in ensuring the rule of law and national security.
