Miraculous tale unfolds in Ekiadolor, Benin: A story of Hope, resilience, compassion, and the unveiling of Grace

A profound and distressing revelation unfolded in Ekiadolor, Benin, as the community grappled with a harrowing incident on January 8, 2024. The discovery of a newborn baby, abandoned and buried alive by her mother, who vanished after giving birth in a nearby bush, has left the community in shock and disbelief.

On that fateful day, a compassionate young boy stumbled upon a heart-wrenching scene in the tranquility of the bush. Encountering a pregnant woman in labor, he swiftly sought help from his mother in the nearby market. Together, they ventured into the bush, only to find traces of a recent birth and an unsettling silence. As the search for the missing pregnant woman intensified, an unexpected revelation transpired – the ground beneath them pulsated with life. With determined hearts, they unearthed a newborn, fragile and buried alive, still connected to the placenta and umbilical cord.

Taking swift action, the boy’s mother enlisted the help of her brother, a vigilant community member, and Police Officer ASP Dolly from the Ekiadolor Division. The newborn was rushed to Ekiadolor Health Centre, where she received essential primary care before being transferred to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH). Upon arrival, the baby exhibited a blue hue, indicative of cyanosis, necessitating expert resuscitation services.

At UBTH, the newborn was christened Grace – a name symbolizing the grace upon her life. In a remarkable display of humanity, the hospital’s management extended a lifeline to Grace, providing expert care in the Special Baby Care Unit (SCBU) and exempting her from all medical bills. The hospital emerged as a sanctuary and a beacon of hope for a child who had faced the darkest of beginnings.

After two weeks of expert neonatal care, baby Grace was discharged from UBTH on January 19, 2024. In an emotional ceremony, the Ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues, along with the Nigerian Police Force, took custody of Grace. UBTH, through its Medical Social Services, Legal Unit, and Public Relations and Protocol Unit, facilitated a seamless transition, ensuring Grace’s journey was met with both compassion and justice.

This poignant story stands as a testament to the triumph of hope over despair, showcasing the indomitable spirit of resilience and the compelling power of collective compassion. It serves as a reminder never to give up on hope, as it is in the darkest hours that the most profound glimmers of light emerge.
