In observance of Holocaust Remembrance Day, the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Abuja conducted a comprehensive educational outreach program at Government Secondary School Gwarinpa. The initiative aimed to impart knowledge about the historical significance of the Holocaust and raise awareness about the perils of antisemitism.
During the program, students were engaged in an enlightening session, urging them to champion tolerance and take a firm stand against all forms of discrimination and hate speech that have the potential to incite violence. Emphasizing the importance of fostering a culture of inclusivity, the students were encouraged to be proactive in promoting unity and understanding.
As part of the educational initiative, the documentary film “The Path to Nazi Genocide” was screened. The film served as a powerful tool to illustrate the atrocities of the Holocaust, prompting students to engage in thoughtful reflection and discussion among themselves.

At a briefing during the event, the exhibition titled “Some were Neighbours” was prominently displayed. Curated by the Digital Media Assistant of the United Nations Information Centre Abuja, the exhibition delves into the role played by ordinary individuals in aiding the perpetrators of the Holocaust. This thought-provoking exhibition highlighted the moral imperative of resisting the temptation to betray fellow human beings, even in the face of extraordinary circumstances. It underscored the notion that alternatives exist to complicity in evil acts, reinforcing the importance of ethical choices during times of crisis.
The UNIC Abuja’s Holocaust Remembrance Day program at Government Secondary School Gwarinpa stands as a testament to the commitment of fostering historical understanding and promoting values of tolerance and empathy among the youth. Through engaging educational tools and insightful exhibitions, the initiative aimed to instill a sense of responsibility among the students to actively combat discrimination and uphold the principles of human dignity.
