Gunmen have claimed the lives of four individuals in the Nkienzha and Teegbe communities of the Miango district, located within the Irigwe chiefdom of the Bassa local government area in Plateau State. This distressing incident transpired late in the evening on both Sunday and Saturday nights, leaving the affected communities in a state of shock and despair. Furthermore, during the attack on the Nkienzha community, one residence was tragically set ablaze, compounding the devastation.

Despite attempts to solicit official statements from the State Police Command and Operation Safe Haven (OpSH), spokespersons from both entities were unavailable for comment at the time of this report. However, Davidson Malison, the outgoing National Publicity Secretary of the Irigwe Development Association (IDA), has provided confirmation of the harrowing events.

Malison stated, “On Sunday, at approximately 11 p.m., assailants launched an attack on the Nkienzha community, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and leaving one person injured, along with the destruction of a residential property. The Irigwe nation unequivocally condemns the resurgence of such heinous attacks and loss of life, deeming them as acts of callousness and barbarism. We urgently call upon the perpetrators to cease their violent actions and restore peace to our land.”

He continued, “We implore the authorities to take swift and decisive action to restore law and order in our community, enabling our residents to resume their daily activities without fear or apprehension. The assault on Nkienzha follows the tragic killing of another promising Rigwe youth in the Teegbe village of the Miango District on Saturday (10/2/2024), as well as a vehicular ambush on Friday (9/2/2024), resulting in injuries to an individual and the deliberate destruction of the vehicle.”

The individuals who tragically lost their lives in the Nkienzha community were identified as 50-year-old Gawan Zhwe, 48-year-old Lydia Yakubu, and 23-year-old Nuhu Yakubu, with Zhime Yakubu sustaining injuries. Additionally, in the Teegbe community, 32-year-old Musa Wolo was fatally attacked on Saturday.”
