Former Vice President and the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, has called for increased awareness and participation in the forthcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa states, scheduled for this Saturday, November 11. These elections mark the first significant polls following the 2023 general elections in Nigeria.
Abubakar addressed the growing public skepticism regarding the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its perceived shortcomings in delivering transparent general elections. Despite these concerns, he emphasized the crucial role of democracy and the need for citizens to remain engaged.
Quoting former U.S. President James Monroe, who asserted that “the best form of government is that which is most likely to prevent the greatest sum of evil,” Abubakar urged Nigerians not to lose faith in democracy. He stressed the importance of active participation in the electoral process to counter anti-democratic elements within the country.
In his appeal to the residents of Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi states, Abubakar encouraged them to exercise their voting rights by supporting PDP candidates in their respective regions.
Abubakar commended Governor Duoye Diri for his people-centered leadership and the positive impact of his administration on infrastructure and social development in Bayelsa. He praised Senator Dino Melaye for his dedication to his constituents and the potential for transformative governance as governor.
In Imo State, Abubakar lauded Senator Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu as a grassroots-connected leader committed to safeguarding his constituents’ interests and elevating governance standards in the state.
Abubakar drew a clear distinction between the PDP and its main rival, the All Progressives Congress (APC), in these elections. He alleged that APC candidates in Kogi, Bayelsa, and Imo were beholden to political godfathers, emphasizing that these elections should prioritize the will of the people over external influences.
Abubakar underscored the significance of these elections in improving the well-being of ordinary citizens. He stressed that when people cast their votes and protect their choices, democracy prevails, ultimately benefiting the people.
Abubakar expressed his gratitude to the public for their attention and wished them a positive voting experience on Saturday.
