The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) officially confirmed a tragic incident in Gbajibo Community within the Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State.
According to a statement on their official social media platform, a total of 30 lives were lost in a boat accident, with the majority of the victims being women and children. The agency also reported that several other individuals were fortunate enough to be rescued.
NEMA’s Minna Operations Office swiftly responded to reports of the boat accident in Gbajibo Community by collaborating with the Niger State State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) to conduct Search and Rescue Operations in the affected areas. The assessment team, under the leadership of Mal. Shamsudeen A. Haliru from the Search and Rescue unit, comprised members such as Shaibu Salifu and Lucky L. Wando from NEMA, along with Hussaini Ibrahim (Public Relations Officer, NSEMA) and Mal. Jaggi from NSEMA.
The tragic incident occurred on September 10th, 2023, in Gbajibo Community when a wooden boat, carrying passengers from Gbajibo waterside to Tunga-Mango for agricultural activities, capsized. In a swift response, the Mokwa Police Division, Nigerian Army, and Marine Police, in coordination with local divers, rushed to the scene to carry out search and rescue operations. Regrettably, 30 lives were lost, with the majority being women and children, while several others were successfully rescued, marking a devastating day for the community.
