EFCC arrests Nigerian-American over alleged $320,000 vehicle import scam

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ilorin Zonal Directorate, have arrested a Nigerian-American, Adegoke Oluwatobi Adams, over an alleged cross-border vehicle import fraud involving more than $320,000, estimated at about ₦434.88 million.

The EFCC disclosed that Adams, who holds dual Nigerian and United States citizenship, is being investigated for alleged criminal breach of trust and obtaining money under false pretences.

According to preliminary investigations, the suspect is allegedly linked to a United States-based syndicate that specializes in defrauding unsuspecting Nigerians by claiming to facilitate the purchase and shipment of vehicles from the United States.

Investigators said Adams allegedly advertised and circulated photographs of a 2024 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG to prospective buyers in Nigeria, promising to procure and ship the luxury vehicle to them.

The commission’s findings indicate that two victims paid a combined sum of $320,000 for the vehicle. One of the victims, Ikechukwu Osita Ifeabunike, reportedly paid $145,000 through an intermediary, while another victim, Godson Azubuike Amans, allegedly paid $175,000 for the same vehicle.

Further investigations reportedly uncovered a prior criminal record involving Adams in the United States, allegedly connected to the unlawful acquisition of vehicles.

The suspect was subsequently arrested by EFCC operatives upon his return to Nigeria.

The anti-graft agency stated that Adams will be charged in court upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.
