Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have commenced an investigation into a suspected impostor, John Anoruo, over alleged possession and use of a forged seal of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Lagos.
Anoruo, who reportedly runs a legal and educational consultancy in the Ikorodu area of the state, was arrested on April 20, 2026, by operatives attached to the EFCC’s Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 in Ikoyi.
According to the commission, the case originated from a petition dated September 22, 2025, which the suspect submitted to the EFCC on behalf of clients against Global West Vessel Specialist Nigeria Limited. Subsequent investigations, however, revealed that both the petition and a follow-up Letter of Withdrawal dated March 5, 2026, bore a forged NBA seal.
Investigators said the suspect admitted to procuring the seal from an undisclosed business centre within Lagos.
During interrogation, the 55-year-old claimed he obtained a law degree in 2018 from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka but did not attend the Nigerian Law School, a mandatory requirement for legal practice in Nigeria.
The EFCC stated that the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
